Old School

As you may know, I'm a big fan of traditional film photography. It was how I learned the art, and also I feel it shows a greater level of skill. Sometimes it feel like these days anyone with a compact camera and photoshop can claim to be a 'photographer'.
But anyway, the other day I got back a developed black and white 35mm film. I've had it for years, as the camera lay forgotten in the back of a cupboard for a long while, so some of the images were very old, and I can't even remember where and when I took them! I really like the way they came out, and I uploaded a few to my flickr.

Age of Steam
This was one of the first photos on the roll, and one of the ones I can't remember where or when I took it! It must have been a while ago, at least 5 years. To be honest I'm surprised the film lasted as well as it did! I love how the grainy, black and white film gave this picture a very 'vintage' feel, almost like an old tintype.

These are more oldies, I'm guessing they must have been taken in Devon, because I know the black swans are from Dawlish!

Some UrbEx photos, from a colliery near Risca. I hate to say 'UrbEx phase', because I want to do more of it, I just don't have anyone to go with. I love how the black and white film really picks out the textures in the broken bricks, and adds an extra atmosphere. Definately a format I want to do more work with :)

Imposing
A few more UrbEx-esque shots, from some random locations around South Wales.

SillhouettedNight-time Shadows
I also have digital versions of these shots, and it's surprising the different aspects that are picked up. I definitely prefer the bolder shadows of the film versions, though the night photography came out a little dark.

So there are my favourites of the black and white film! As for my personal life at the moment, I have recently moved down to Falmouth for university. It's so beautiful down here, but I haven't managed to get any photos yet... Every time it's sunny and I grab my camera and head for the door, the weather turns! The forecast is good for this weekend though, so hopefully I'll get some nice images. I promise I'll get some as soon as possible!

Till then,

New photos!

Heya,
I've just uploaded some of my more recent work onto flickr.
Bare Bones Examination Not My Fault
These three were part of a photoshoot for RazorLust. We went to a big, abandoned mansion near where we live, and proceeded to frolic around the stables in costume. The shoot was inspired by the Steampunk trend, of which we are all fans. More photos from the shoot can be found on the RazorLust website

These next few are from a recent trip to London. I had taken a lot more photos, but I'm trying to limit my uploads and I felt that the night photography showed off a different aspect of my work. The statue was in the Tate Modern, which I would recommend a visit to. It's really great, and doesn't actually take all that long to look around, I was surprised. As for the southbank as a whole, I really enjoyed it. I've never really been there before, and I love that it's got this chilled out, laid back vibe that's so different to the rest of London. There were people having beach parties, a saxophonist under a lampost, a fire juggler, a huge second hand book market. I enjoyed it so much, and I actually ended up teaching a friend a thing or two about how to take night photographs!

Bubbles Lion's Den Stony Spirit Blunderbuss Statuesque In Bloom
These last few are a pretty random collection to have all been taken on one day, but are all from my 18th birthday party! I had an old-fashioned picnic tea party in place called Dewstow Gardens. It was built between 1895 and 1925, and is mostly made up of false grottoes, caves, rock formations and lakes, as well as standard features like a rock garden, croquet lawn and walled gardens. It's absolutely amazing, and I'd highly recommend a visit. Unfortunately, there is just so much happening in the grottoes, with water dripping, tropical vines dangling from the roof and flowers of every colour filling your vision, that I couldn't actually get that many photographs of the beautiful gardens themselves. Everything ended up looking too busy. However, it did provide a spectacular backdrop for some pictures of my friends in their finery. I especially like the down-lit picture of Matt with his goggles and blunderbuss!

I hope you like my most recent work! Next time I won't upload so much in one swoop, and I'll have more space to write about each picture indvidually.

Peace,
Vix

Welcome

Hey there,

I've blogged in the past but never really had anything to blog about, so they've always ended up wilting away into the aether. However, I'm now going to be terribly professional and start a photography blog, to try and let any followers I may have know about my latest work and inspiration.

Just for starters, since I don't want to inundate you in my first post, here are some quick links, to my website, flickr and deviantart page, containing my print shop.

Please check them out, they're all regularly updated!
